Retrovision: Electronic - Disappointed

Electronic released "Disappointed" in June 1992, and it resonates as one of the finest songs from the Pet Shop Boys during the 90s. The collaboration, involving key members from The Smiths, New Order, and the Pet Shop Boys, resulted in one of the most notable musical side projects of that era.

New Order Reveal New Single 'Be a Rebel'

New Order are back with their first new single in almost five years. The new single is called "Be a Rebel" and is out on Mute. It is available on all streaming services and YouTube link below.

Gorillaz Release Series of EPs / Episode 3 with Peter Hook

Gorillaz have returned this year with a series of EPs entitled 'Song Machine'. Structure wise, each EP consists of a lead track and "Machine Bitez". EP 3 in particular caught our attention as the lead track "Aries" has been done in collaboration with Peter Hook and Georgia. The New Order bass line is very evident here and if this was not a Gorillaz track, one could guess that Damon Albarn has provided guest vocals on a New Order track.

Let's step back into 1989 and celebrate its 30th anniversary, a year that served as both the culmination of the '80s decade and a precursor to the changes that would define the '90s. It's renowned as a year of revolutions, witnessing sweeping changes in Eastern Bloc countries in Europe, and a year of technological innovations with the introduction of the first commercial internet services.

Musically, the charts were still under the influence of Stock-Aitken-Waterman hits, which also welcomed Donna Summer into their hits factory. However, the latter part of 1989 saw the emergence of new sounds. House music, spearheaded by acts like Inner City and S'Express, gained prominence, while Italo disco evolved into the Euro dance genre. While 1989 may be chronologically associated with the '80s, it undeniably encapsulated the spirit of the impending '90s, with music styles that would reach their peaks in the following decade and beyond.

This fall we will continue with our 30-year anniversary of 1987 with the selection of Best single releases. As mentioned, an interesting year which was still sort of a crossover year in which some music styles from the first half of the decade started to transform into new genres, raising new musical opportunities and opening stages for new kids. The European market was mostly dominated by SAW releases while in the USA it was mostly Madonna, Whitney Houston, U2 who were holding top positions on the charts for several weeks.

Along the commercial level, creativity was also in bloom in all varieties of sounds, from Jangle Pop all the way to new trends in electronic music.

New Order's New Singles Compilation Announced

New Order have announced the release of a brand new Singles compilation. This will be a revision of their compilation which was released in 2005 and included some errors. These new edition add "I’ll Stay With You" from 2013’s "Lost Sirens", but sadly no track from the last year's album 'Music Complete'. This will be available as a heavyweight 180 gram 4LP vinyl box set and a double-CD and is released on 9 September 2016.

n the early months of 1985, the Pet Shop Boys made a significant impact on the UK charts with "West End Girls," a track that would go on to become their signature tune and biggest hit. Alongside Erasure, they played a pivotal role in transforming synth-pop into electro-dance, giving the genre a fresh and contemporary sound. The Communards also contributed to this evolving trend, as their cover of the disco classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" emerged as the best-selling single of the year.

Meanwhile, established artists like Madonna and George Michael continued to be among the best-selling acts, further shaping the pop genre. Madonna's third studio album, "True Blue," stood out as the best-selling album in the UK during this period, solidifying her status as a pop icon. New Order Announced a New Album for September

New Order will return in September with their 10th studio album entitled "Music Complete'. It's the follow up to their 2005 studio release 'Waiting For The Siren’s Call' and it sees keyboardist Gillian Gilbert returning for the first time since 2001’s 'Get Ready'. The album will include 11 tracks and will be available in a number of formats and it is set for release on September 25th.

The event was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London, UK, and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, US. Also inspired by Band-Aid, USA for Africa band project released "We Are the World", a song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. 

Among the best-selling albums this year was Dire Straits’ album Brothers in Arms, which at the same time was the first ever album to be released on CD. Jennifer Rush had the best-selling single in the UK with "The Power of Love" while in the USA, Madonna and George Michael both solo and with Wham! ruled the charts. 

With 1985 New Wave completely faded, knocked out by guitar-driven rock most notably by the Jangle rock which in this period of time was popularized as College rock with R.E.M. and The Smiths paving the way. On the other hand, Electronic music was transforming into new rhythms with the emerging Chicago house and Detroit techno that would give hits in the years to come.

Mad World- A Brand New Oral History of New Wave Out Now

A little bit of something to get back on our 80's track. A brand new New Wave book is out. It is entitled Mad World and it is a highly entertaining oral history that celebrates the New Wave music phenomenon of the 1980s via new interviews with 35 of the most notable artists of the period. Each chapter begins with a discussion of their most popular song but leads to stories of their history and place in the scene, ultimately painting a vivid picture of this colorful, idiosyncratic time. Mixtape suggestions, fashion sidebars, and quotes from famous contemporary admirers help fill out the fun. Participants include members of Duran Duran, New Order, The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Adam Ant, Echo and the Bunnymen, Devo, ABC, Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, and INXS. The video for the song proved to be challenging for the MTV airwaves, and it is also considered as one of the best videos of all time. Electronic' Debut Reissue Announced for March

EMI Music have announced the release of Electronic' self titled debut album. The new 2CD reissue will include a newly remastered edition of the original album on one disc, accompanied by a second CD featuring a dozen alternate versions, remixes, edits, B-sides and instrumentals, including their biggest hit and Neil Tennant collaboration on “Disappointed”. The album which was originally released in 1991 and first time reissued in 2007 will be out on March 11th in the U.K.

Out This Week: New Order- The Lost Sirens

New Order are proud to announce the release of 'The Lost Sirens', an eight track mini album featuring Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Philip Cunningham. Featuring a truly eclectic mix of electronica and guitars, 'The Lost Sirens' features eight tracks which were recorded during the sessions for 'Waiting For The Sirens Call' and are all previously unreleased. The album is available on CD, LP and digital. 

Retrovision: Electronic- Forbidden City

The Britsh duo Electronic comprising Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr released their sixth single "Forbidden City" in June 1996. The song was taken from their second album 'Raise The Pressure', their first release on Parlophone which was co-produced by Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk. The song was not a huge hit reaching only #14 on the UK Singles Chart, but did receive substantial radio play in Britain and remains one of Johnny Marr's favourite Electronic songs. This year in February Johnny Marr announced the release of his debut album 'The Messenger' and there are rumours of possible Electronic reissues during this year. 

New Order Mojo Special

The February issue of Mojo has New Order on the cover and a 12 page feature inside. The Manchester godfathers of electronic music are back, restored and strengthened, to add another chapter to their grand saga. Ian Harrison speaks to the band and their estranged bassist to find a new vitality charging through the old circuits.

Best of 1981 - Top 50 Singles List

Following the tragic death of John Lennon in December 1980, the world was still in mourning after the loss of one of the most influential musical masterminds of all time. All this did also had impact on the charts as where his biggest hits "Woman" and "Imagine" could be found again. Even Roxy Music paid tribute to him by covering "Jealous Guy".

Apart from this, the charts were still dominated by the rising stars of 1980, Adam and the Ants, while The Police had more hits. Human League re-formed this year, exiting the dark phase and releasing "Don't You Want Me Baby" which together with Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" helped to emblem the music style which would in the coming years be known as Synth-pop.

Along with the increasing popularity of synth driven music, the New Romantic movement slowly grew to fame as new kids adopted synths and started wearing lipstick. Perhaps the biggest event of the year was the launch of MTV, which aired "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles. The song became a huge hit and a symbol for the new platform, which would give the music industry a new face and dimension.

New Order- Lost Sirens

The recently reunited New Order is set to release their first LP since "Waiting For The Sirens Call" this December. The new album which is entitled "Lost Sirens" will include all the tracks from the "Waiting for The Sirens Call" Session which were not included on the album. The album is out on December 14, 2011 and it is available on pre-order. They have also announced that they will be playing three concerts in South America this December.

The Manchester Connection Art Exhibition

The Movie Poster Art Gallery is pleased to announce a fascinating exhibition of original and rare music posters entitled “The Manchester Connection”, a celebration of Manchester's legendary renaissance in musical and design creativity that exploded in the wake of the Sex Pistols' legendary 1976 Free Trade Hall gig.

Highlights include rare original music posters from The Smiths, New Order, A Certain Ratio, Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses, The Haçienda, plus an ultra rare poster of Joy Division's debut album “Unknown Pleasures,” rare sleeve proofs of The Smiths, A Certain Ratio, New Order, and a unique Morrissey hand-annotated sleeve proof for his album "Your Arsenal," plus rare artefacts including the original FAC51 embosser used at the HAÇIENDA, the original "Gay Traitor" bar menu poster from the HAÇIENDA.
The exhibition runs from 12th-25th November at the Movie Poster Art Gallery, 1 Colville Place, London, W1T 2BG.
