Retrovision: Lush- Ladykillers

Twenty years ago Lush released their single "Ladykillers" on 4AD which became their best selling single. It is considered as one of the best Brit Pop tracks ever recorded during the 90's. A music video for the song, directed by Mark Pellington, was released in 1996 and it featured the band performing the song, as well as footage of praying mantises decapitating one another. On 19 February 2016, the band announced the 'Blind Spot' EP, the band's first new material since 1996.

Next Wave: Samantha Urbani

Already last year Samantha Urbani caught quite a deal of attention with her song "1,2,3,4" released in April last year. It remains one of the most memorable dance tunes that has kept us on feet throughout 2015. At home in LA and NYC, she is a singer, songwriter, visual artist and skilled to so many things related to these. Her musical starts date back to 2010, when she formed internationally successful dance-punk band Friends. The band dissolved after releasing one album and several singles till 2013. Before launching her solo career, Samantha collaborated with Domino Records artist Dev Hynes.
After two single releases as solo artist in 2015, she has surprised us yesterday when she revealed the video for possible new single "Milk Makeup". Hope there is more to follow and possible new EP or Album release.
Stay updated and follow Samantha on Twitter and Facebook.

Best of 1986- The Album List

n the early months of 1985, the Pet Shop Boys made a significant impact on the UK charts with "West End Girls," a track that would go on to become their signature tune and biggest hit. Alongside Erasure, they played a pivotal role in transforming synth-pop into electro-dance, giving the genre a fresh and contemporary sound. The Communards also contributed to this evolving trend, as their cover of the disco classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" emerged as the best-selling single of the year.

Meanwhile, established artists like Madonna and George Michael continued to be among the best-selling acts, further shaping the pop genre. Madonna's third studio album, "True Blue," stood out as the best-selling album in the UK during this period, solidifying her status as a pop icon. The musical landscape of 1985 reflected a dynamic fusion of synth-pop, electro-dance, and enduring pop influences.

Colin Vearncombe (Black) - 1962 - 2016

Another sad news for the music world, as yesterday it was announced that Colin Vearncombe from Black has passed away. The 53-year-old has had sustained swelling on his brain and was in coma after his car accident. "Wonderful Life" and "Everything is Coming Up Roses" are still great songs and alwyas bring up nice childhood memories. His early singles still remain as the obscure treasure which hopefully will be released on day. Last year, he released 8th and final album 'Blind Faith'.

In 2007 we did a small presentation with emphasis on early Black

Retrovision: Eurythmics- It's Alright

"It's Alright" was the final release for Eurythmics from the album 'Be Yourself Tonight' released in 1985. The song managed to chart in the UK during March 1986 so this is the 30th anniversary for the song release. Sadly the song did not have big impact on the US charts. The song's music video, directed by Willy Smax, was a combination of live shots with computer animation, an innovative look for a music video in the mid 1980s.

David Bowie 1947 - 2016

It was quite a shocking moment of morning coffee when my colleague told me the news about David Bowie's passing away. I was just thinking, that's not possible! Slowly, I begun to realize and was saddened by the news and the fact that the music world has lost it's biggest star ever. Six decades of music and body of artwork, more than 25 studio albums, more than 100 single releases, and more than 1000 fragments of colours, images and impressions.
You will be missed and your legacy will certainly live on. This has been a fantsastic voyage!
Thank you David!

John Cale's 'Music for New Society' to be Reissued

It's been 46 years since John Cale released his first single and album. He never really left the music scene and was pretty much present in every decade. Now 33 years after the original release one of his most unique solo records 'Music for New Society' will be reissued. The Album has been completely re-mastered from the original files, while its download card includes three exclusive tracks. Along with the album comes M:Fans bonus which includes old tracks reworked in the new context to resonate with the digital age.
In 1982, Music For A New Society sounded exactly like its title: something futuristic, a new kind of songwriting exercise. Today, M:FANS is exactly that too: full of electrical crackle and disturbed frequencies, a different kind of dystopian future awaits.
Below you can see the video for the song 'Close Watch' which was one of our Top ten videos on 2015 and the original version from 1983.

Japan's Story in Music in 'A Foreign Place' Book

Burning Shed Label has announced the release of 'A Foreign Place' is a comprehensive biography of the influential band Japan which was written by musician and author, Anthony Reynolds.
It chronicles the rise and fall of one of one of the most respcted and influental New romantic Artpop bands and lifts the veil on the creative processes and personal histories of a fascinating group of introspective musicians whose activities have frequently been shrouded in secrecy.
Reynolds, previously responsible for books on The Walker Brothers and Leonard Cohen, engagingly details the strange twists and turns that saw a group of friends from working class South London develop from unpromising provincial Glam Funk origins to eventually become the authors of the innovative and exotic sonic assault of the globally successful 'Tin Drum'.
Written with the full approval and co-operation of Richard Barbieri, Steve Jansen and Rob Dean, the book contains many unseen period photographs, as well as first-hand accounts of the band and its music from friends, music industry associates and musical collaborators.

School of Seven Bells Anounce the Release of their Final Album

School of Seven Bells have announced the release of their fourth and final album. The only remaining member of the group Alejandra Deheza has revealed the story behind it for Stereogum. Alejandra also shared this beautiful words on their official page.

"Benjamin and I wrote this record during a tour break in the summer of 2012. I can easily say that it was one of the most creative and inspired summers of our lives. What followed was the most tragic, soul shaking tidal wave that life could deliver, but even that wouldn’t stop the vision for this record from being realized. This is a love letter from start to finish. It’s the story of us starting from that first day we met in 2004, and that’s the story of School of Seven Bells. So much love to all of you. Thank you for being a constant light in our lives. This record is for you <3"

Dimension Gondry: Bjork- Bachelorette

Our final video from the Dimension Gondry will be another Bjork video. It was very hard to select which one to go with as Michael has directed several videos for Bjork. It's for the song "Bachelorette" which was released as a single in 1997. This music video is an exploration of self reference. The video was based on an original idea by Björk, who saw "Bachelorette" as a continuation of the character portrayed in "Isobel" and "Human Behaviour". The art direction of the video was heavily praised. The video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Art Direction.

In Conversation: October Dance

It was October 2012 when we first got in to the music of October Dance. It was a lovely autumn electro dance affair of "Houses Falling" that caught our attention back then....and yes it happened in October somehow! It still remains as one of the most memorable songs for this year. Soon after, band's universe started to grow. They secured the first record deal, released first EPs and their fanbase has been growing since that. It hard to describe their music in one genre; it has its roots in art pop and it is dance music inspired by variety and diversity of 70's disco, 80's sytnh-pop and 90's house-pop. This year, they have also been performing on the Roskilde festival for the first time and got big plans for the future. Find out more about October Dance's early influence, music video releases and much more.

Very Special Thanks to Tobias Kiel Lauesen!

Best of 1985 - Top 50 Singles List

The year 1985 was the year of big charity concerts and records. Following up on the release of "Do They Know It’s Christmas Time" from 1984, the big Live Aid concert was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the ongoing Ethiopian famine. The event was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London, UK, and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, US. Also inspired by Band-Aid, USA for Africa band project released "We Are the World", a song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
Among the best-selling albums this year was Dire Straits’ album Brothers in Arms, which at the same time was the first ever album to be released on CD. Jennifer Rush had the best-selling single in the UK with "The Power of Love" while in the USA, Madonna and George Michael both solo and with Wham! ruled the charts.
With 1985 New Wave completely faded, knocked out by guitar-driven rock most notably by the Jangle rock which in this period of time was popularized as College rock with R.E.M. and The Smiths paving the way. On the other hand, Electronic music was transforming into new rhythms with the emerging Chicago house and Detroit techno that would give hits in the years to come.

Retrovision: Kirlian Camera- Blue Room

"Blue Room" was released thirty years ago and it was the only single release for them in 1985. In the second half of the 80's decade the sound of Kirlian Camera became gradually darker, moving away from the synth pop sound that marked some of their early releases. Not sure who directed the video for the song, but it prefectly refelcts the really anxious, claustrophobic and emotionally exciting atmosphere of the song. Kirlian Camera is still pretty active in music and two year ago they released a brand new studio album with the new line up.

Girls Names to Release 'Arms Around A Vision' in October

Girls Names are back with a new album this year which will be out in October. The album will be entitled 'Arms Around A Vision' and it will be their third studio album and a follow up to their brilliant 'New Life' album from 2013. 'Arms Around a Vision' is expected to be more widescreen and  also more direct and aggressive. Conceptually, the album acts as a love letter to European elegance – Italian futurism, Russian constructivism, Germany’s Zero Group and both Neubaten and Bowie’s Berlin. (from the Press Release). The album is set for release on October 2nd on Tough Love. "Reticence" is the first track out of 12 which was premiered on Quietus.

Dimension Gondry: Radiohead- Knives Out

A new dimension Gondry episode is here. It's the video for Radiohead's song "Knives Out" which was released in 2001 and which was taken from their album 'Amnesiac'. The video features Thom Yorke in a hospital by the bedside of a woman.. The whole video was shot in one take, quite remarkable considering the scene changes required. Attempts to interpret the surreal imagery and fit it with the song lyrics were dashed when Gondry eventually revealed that the video was autobiographical. Some may find thematic parallels with Gondry's later film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The "Knives Out" video was not included in Gondry's compilation DVD 'The Work of Director Michel Gondry'.
