David Bowie 1947 - 2016

It was quite a shocking moment of morning coffee when my colleague told me the news about David Bowie's passing away. I was just thinking, that's not possible! Slowly, I begun to realize and was saddened by the news and the fact that the music world has lost it's biggest star ever. Six decades of music and body of artwork, more than 25 studio albums, more than 100 single releases, and more than 1000 fragments of colours, images and impressions.
You will be missed and your legacy will certainly live on. This has been a fantsastic voyage!
Thank you David!

Best of 1983- The Album List

The year 1982 was undeniably dominated by Michael Jackson's groundbreaking album "Thriller," which went on to become the best-selling album of all time. The accompanying music video for the title track presented a significant challenge for MTV airwaves but is now regarded as one of the greatest music videos ever created. Riding on the wave of Michael Jackson's success, other artists achieved notable milestones: David Bowie released "Let's Dance," his most commercially successful album up to that point. On the female front, both Madonna and Cyndi Lauper made their debut appearances, exploring unconventional and unique styles. Kim Wilde received recognition by winning the Brit Award for Best British Female Artist.
Meanwhile, in 1982, Germany produced the first compact discs, which were initially sold in Japan during the third quarter of the same year. These CDs were later introduced to the U.S. market in 1983, revolutionizing the music industry in the years to come.
As New Wave gradually transitioned into Pop, the decade's most significant stars—Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, and George Michael—continued to dominate the charts for the remainder of the '80s and beyond.

David Bowie- Zeit! 77-79, The Berlin Trilogy Revisited

After David Bowie's big comeback with 'The Next Day', EMI Records has announced a repackaging the existing versions of the Low (1977), “Heroes” (1977), Stage (1978) and Lodger (1979) CDs together in a cardboard slipcase, under the box set name of  'DAVID BOWIE – ZEIT! 77-79'. The three studio albums here were released between 1977 and 1979 and are generally referred to as the somewhat misleading Berlin Trilogy. A more unifying theme throughout the three recordings is the presence of Mr Bowie, Mr Eno and Mr Visconti.

The Return of David Bowie (Another Berlin Chapter?)

This morning of January 8th will certainly last in our memory. Out of nowhere came the news about the brand new David Bowie single "Where Are We Know?". Premiered on his 66 birthday, the track takes us back to Berlin and there are speculations of a possible fourth chapter of the Berlin Trilogy which will be called 'The Next Day' and which will be released on March 16th. The first single is produced by Tony Visconti with it's lyrics and the video (below) features footage of Berlin, and Bowie's face projected onto a shape, by long-time collaborator Tony Oursler.
More Bowie News to come.

Books: Electric Dreams: The Human League, Heaven 17 and the Sound of the Steel City

"Electric Dreams', the long awaited super book by David Buckley which tells the story of how a band, a city and a lot of synthesizers provided the ultimate soundtrack to the Eighties. David Buckley, the acclaimed author of 'Strange Fascination: David Bowie – The Definitive Story', charts the Human League’s unlikely rise from avant-garde veterans of the punk wars to international pop sensations and reveals how a small number of bands in Sheffield created the music that came to define an era: electro-pop. The release of the book also marks the thirtieth anniversary of 'Dare', the Human League’s seminal third album. Pre-order your book here.

Best of 1980 - Top 50 Singles List

It was an interesting year at the crossroads still very influenced by the 70's music and culture but also slowly opening the doors to the new decade and adopting new trends and styles. Blondie, Abba, The Police and The Jam still ruled the charts. David Bowie scored his second number one hit this year while Kate Bush became the first British female artist to have a No.1 album. It was also a sad year in music as the music world lost two very influential musical artists and iconic figures. Ian Curtis of Joy Division hanged himself just days before the US Tour kick off and John Lennon was shot dead outside his apartment building in New York City, both leaving their families and thousands of fans in mourning and sorrow. The year ended with John Lennon's song "{Just Like) Starting Over" reaching number one in the UK charts announcing the new decade.

During our 30 year anniversary of 1980 in 2010, the following albums were voted Top 50 Singles by Burning Flame friends and readers including in-house votes.

David Bowie- China Girl

The third video labeled as Nude Wave is a clip for David Bowie's song "China Girl". The music video was directed by David Mallet’s and mainly shot in the Chinatown district of Melbourne, and on a houseboat on Sydney Harbour, Australia. It featured the actress and model Geeling Ng lying and David Bowie naked in the surf. Since the video was too explicit for the MTV early years it got slightly censored for the airplay.

Instant Hit- The Associates- Boys Keep Swinging

"Boys Keep Swinging" was a debut single by the Scottish group The Associates. This song was actually released before the original one which was written and performed by David Bowie. By infringing the copyright, the band attracted a good deal of attention back then, but it remains as one of the best cover songs ever recorded.

Leisure Process

Leisure Process was a short lived New Wave duo comprised of sax player Gary Barnacle and singer Ross Middleton. Gary Barnacle was a saxophonist and brass instrument arranger primarily noted for session work, during the 1980's, with a large number of popular music acts including Kim Wilde, Visage, Dalek I Love You and Level 42. Ross Middleton was a member of the UK outfit Positive Noise before he teamed up with Barnacle.

Together they formed Leisure Process in 1981. Leisure Process was produced by Marin Rushent and it released several singles in 1982 and 1983 but never managed to record an album. Even though they provided similar sound to some of the popular groups at that time, they remained as an 80’s obscurity. Their sound was a synthetic with Middleton’s manic vocals and Barnacle’s excellent sax solos. At some points it reminded of Human League especially when you compare “Love Action” with “Love Cascade”.

After working with a line up of great artists Barnacle released a solo album Paradise in 2002.Here are some acts for whom Barnacle has contributed session work.
